AIRPORT CONCESSION TO BOOST JOB CREATION, ECONOMY – SSG
The Secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Mr Chiedu Ebie, has said that the concession of the Asaba International Airport would create more jobs for Deltans and stimulate economic activities, particularly, export of agricultural produce in the state.
Mr. Ebie, a lawyer, made this known while speaking on “News Across the Nation”, Channels Television, on Wednesday, February 24, 2021.
According to him, the other aspects of development expected from the concession is in the area of movement of cargoes to foster export operations, hotels, a conference centre, industrial site, office facilities, tank farms and a hangar for the maintenance and overhaul of aircrafts.
“We expect that with the investments that are coming and the revenue that will accrue, it will make a lot of economic sense for the benefit of Deltans,” Ebie said.
The SSG stated that the state government was partnering the private sector to boost revenue in the state.
His words : “We settled for concession arrangement for the Asaba International Airport, but there are other things we have partnerships with the private sector, like the Kwale Industrial Park which we started due to the opportunity of gas in the area and the anchor investor-ceramic manufacturing.”
“There are also the Agro Industrial Park in Ogwashi-Uku, in Aniocha South Local Government Area (LGA), the modular refinery in Kwale, Ndokwa West LGA and a trailer park at Umunede in Ika North East LGA of the state.”
“So, there are a lot of private sector initiatives that we are working on; not necessarily concession, but most important is realising that government cannot do it all alone, so there is the need to bring in private investment to boost commercial activities as well.”

Comrade Oforbruku said that when completed, commissioned and occupied by civil servants in the state, government would spend less on payment of rents on residential apartments, erstwhile used as offices in the state capital, adding that there was the need to encourage maintenance culture among the civil servants who would soon occupy the secretariat so as to save it from early decaying, just as he urged the state government to put necessary measures on ground to ensure its constant clean up and maintenance.
Comrade Oforbruku used the opportunity to enjoin the state government to beef up security in the state through effective community policing, adding that the Operation Delta Hawk of the state government should spread out its operation further away from the urban areas, towns and cities into the hinterlands where kidnapping, raping and killing of residents by suspected herdsmen were more prevalent.
He suggested combing of the forests to flush out perpetrators of dastardly crimes in the state, adding that such timely action would ensure food security in the state, as farmers would then go about farming without molestations.
