To stop further use of an empty plot of land close to Shoprite, Effurun, in Uvwie Local Government Area, as a dumping ground, the Delta State Waste Management Board has embarked on the fencing of the property.
The Hon Emmanuel Chinye led Board, which commenced the evacuation of illegal refuse dumps across the three senatorial districts of the state on Friday last week, frowned at the unauthorized use of the land as a refuse dump, and warned residents of the area to desist from the illegal act.
Speaking on the necessity of fencing off the illegal refuse dump, Hon Chinye said it was thwarting the efforts of the Board at enthroning a seamless waste disposal system through the Private Sector Participants arrangement.
He said it was obvious that residents of the area had yet to key into the PSP project, hence they decided to use the undeveloped plot of land as a dump site, insisting that the practice was unacceptable as it ran foul of the law.
The DSWMB Chairman noted that enough sensitization had been mounted on the need for residents of already zoned pilot towns and cities to register with the PSPs, but regretted that some individuals had chosen not to subscribe to the partnership arrangement.
Hon Chinye urged the PSPs across the state to continue to do their best to ensure regular evacuation of refuse from the homes, business premises and offices of their clients, assuring them of continued support of the Board.
